Introduction
Counter-Extremism
Fighting extremism is a core part of Catalyst Montana’s work to build safe, inclusive communities across the state.
This program carries forward the long legacy of the Montana Human Rights Network, which since 1990 has supported Montanans in understanding, tracking, and responding to hate and extremist activity.
Today, Catalyst Montana continues that work by monitoring and analyzing threats such as hate groups, militia activity, Christian nationalism, white nationalism, antisemitism, anti-Indigenous movements, anti-immigrant activity, and other forms of discrimination.
We advance this work through:
Opposition Monitoring & Research
Intelligence & Analysis
Political & Candidate Research
Community Activation
Trainings
Building resources to combat hate
Why this matters in Montana:
Montana’s rural landscape, history of organized extremism, and growing political polarization make it especially important to stay informed and proactive. Extremist activity can directly impact the safety, rights, and well-being of marginalized communities across the state.
By equipping communities with accurate information, building awareness, and supporting collective response, our work helps protect democracy, strengthens community resilience, and ensures that all Montanans can live with dignity, safety, and belonging.
